A force sensitive resistor (FSR) is a unique type of sensor. The beauty of it is that when you press down on the top, its resistance changes. Resistance: This is a value used to quantify how hard it is for electricity to move through the material. This is because when the FSR is pushed harder, it has lower resistance. So then, if you wire this FSR up to a circuit you can measure the pressure by measuring changes in resistance. Having that little helper, even if it only tell you how hard you are pressing is easier than nothing.

How Force Sensitive Resistor Circuits Measure Compression

When you push on the FSR its resistance will change. How much it changes resistance depends on how hard you press. The less hard you press the lesser will be the change and more harder changes a lot. The circuit can then sense this resistive change, and convert into a signal. This signal can then be read by the computer or device and therefore, it knows where you are pressing — hence being able to make that reaction.

Touchscreens: A variety of modern touchscreens, such as those in most smartphones and tablet computers use FSRs to determine where you are touching the screen. This is a great feature for things like drawing and games where the amount of pressure you use can effect how the screen reacts.
