Do you know how a rubber band stretches when you pull it and returns to normal after you let go? A flex sensor works pretty much the same but fancier! It is a unique gadget that checks the amount of bend or stretch in a material like rubber or plastic when you touch or pull it. This makes flex sensors very useful for multiple tasks and applications. Here is how it works: consider a rubber that markets electricity. When this rubber is flat, electricity passes effortlessly because there is no blockade. However, whenever you stretch or bend the rubber, it is difficult for electricity to flow. This change is what is called resistance. The sensor obtains this resistance to determine how much hotel rubber was flexed or stretched. This ability to measure the changing state is a staple of flex sensors. Flex sensors are used in various sectors whereby one needs to determine how much something has been stretched or prior. For example, it can be used to determine how much a muscle stretches or contracts during exercise, study steps of a robot and other machines when functioning, measure pressure encountered in tires, a phone and gas pedal, a chair and even multiple varying objects. It can be applied in various sectors ranging from health, sports, engineering, and robotics among others.
The good news is that flex sensors are the most versatile, they can work with different materials since they are easy to bend. They can also be small, so they could fit easily in other devices (watches, fitness trackers or medical tools). It is also a very high resolution sensor, which means it captures the smallest of movements. That accuracy is important for cases when you need measurements like in healthcare and robotics.
The surrounding support structure is relatively straight forward, but the same cannot be said when designing anywhere from a basic flex sensor to something more advanced. If you want to see how much a rubber band stretches, then the sensor needs to be built from something that behaves like rubber. Thus the sensor also can be stretchable and flexible as well just like a band of rubber. Why it has to work the sensor-specific material being measured and if not suitable then obviously that one also faces problems with its mechanism.
You also have to figure out how you will attach the sensor to what are trying measure. This can be achieved in numerous ways depending on various application, specifically with wires sprinkled throughout the surface or using some conductive ink will help a lot to transfer information or even some stretchable circuits. All methods have their pros and cons. It completely depends on how strongly and tightly the connection is set so that it does not come apart or loosen as time goes by. Good connection: sensor will work correctly and provide precise readings
As is inevitable with any device, flex sensors may suffer from issues that will require solving. One of the most common problems is the sensor does not give correct readings. If not placed properly or due to interference by other electronics, this can happen. This can be solved by resetting the sensor or changing its position to an area where it is not being disrupted from other devices.
There is one other issue that may arise, and it would be the sensor could fire too easily or not to easy enough. This is usually corrected by either modifying the resistive nature of the sensor itself or tuning its internal components for better accuracy. Take these settings into account, do not get them solved, then you may need to buy a new one or someone else who has better experience with such device´s help. Having a competent human to assist when things go wrong is always beneficial.
Such a sensor could also be useful in healthcare. They could help doctors learn to watch how patients move or assist in the process of rehabbing from an injury, operation and more. The use flex sensors in physical therapy treatments could be helpful to track movements and ensure a patient is healing well. There is no doubt in the brighter futures of flex sensors and new future use cases!
